50+ Million Americans Without Health Coverage
The number of Americans without health insurance increased 4.4 million, according to information released by the Census Bureau last week. Over 50 million people are uninsured – a record – which reflects the battered economy.

* 50.7 million Americans were uninsured in 2009
* 6.6 million people have less employer coverage in 2009. There were 27.8 million working adults with health insurance.

The number of uninsured increased is not surprising, reflecting the deepening recession, which began in late 2008, but hurts the economy in 2009. The unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in 2008, but rose to 9.3 percent in 2009.

Political impact
