Spaghetti Bolognese: the perfect family dish

If only one recipe could be named a family staple in the home, it would probably be Spaghetti Bolognese. While possibly the most well known Italian recipe in the universe, most folks have their own variation of the Spaghetti Bolognese sauce. Traditionally, veal or chicken livers were an essential ingredient of the recipe. However, different folks have different tastes and this has become an almost free-for-all recipe. This particular recipe calls for ground beef and carrots.

• 2 teaspoons olive oil
• 1 crushed garlic clove
• 1 finely chopped medium onion
• 1 peeled and sliced medium carrot
• 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
• 1 cup of sliced mushrooms
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 can of crushed tomatoes (14-ounce)
• 2 teaspoons Heinz Worcestershire sauce
• ¼ cup of milk
• ¾ pound of spaghetti or linguine

Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Add onions, carrots and garlic, stirring until the onions are softened. Stir in meat and cook until it is browned. Add oregano and the mushrooms and cook for a couple of minutes. Add Worcestershire sauce and pour in tomatoes. Simmer for about 25 minutes. Pour in the milk stirring well and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package instructions. Serve with a crunchy, colorful salad and garlic bread and dinner is done.

There are many different versions of this recipe, some slower and more luxurious. This is a simple one, however, and is pleasing to the entire family. Even the fussiest of families love this recipe. The sauce is also very good for lasagna, as well as other pasta dishes.

Since the sauce can be prepared in advance and in huge amounts, as well as easily frozen and defrosted, it is a definite favorite of the cook’s. This dish can be relied on for days, alleviating the cook’s time in the kitchen. And, oftentimes, the leftovers are much better. More importantly, the family seems to never tire of this relatively simple and inexpensive meal.
