disease FDA Approves New Drug for Pompe DiseaseThe Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for people with late-onset Pompe disease. This is called alpha alglucosidase (Lumizyme).

Pompe disease affects between 5,000 and 10,000 people worldwide. It is a rare lysosomal storage disorder caused by lack of an enzyme called acid alpha-1 ,4-glucosidase. This lack leads to an accumulation of glycogen, eventually leading to muscle damage, and can be fatal when respiratory and cardiovascular systems are affected.

Lumizyme replaces alpha-glucosidase is required (GAA) in the body, thus reducing the accumulation of glycogen. The drug, which was approved on the basis of a study of 90 patients between 10 and 70 years, has not been approved for younger patients suffering from Pompe disease. The other effective drug Myozyme market – which has been approved for patients younger people – are currently in short supply and is reserved for those with Pompe disease, less than 8 years.

Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death for all people in the United States by the National Center for Prevention and Control.

Young men and older men are particularly vulnerable. The highest rate of suicide among men aged 20-24 years, which if isolated from the general statistics on suicide, the suicide scene as the third leading cause of death. Older people suffer from the loss of a loved one, friends and feel isolated, ignored, worthless, or too dependent on others.
