11/30 Lecture: The Doula Advantage

The Doula Advantage
Monday November 30th, 7:00pm-8:30pm
With guest speaker Teresa Howard

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to an experienced professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support to the mother before, during and just after birth. A doula can also provide emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that women who receive doula care have shorter labors with fewer complications, and healthier babies who breastfeed more easily. These are only a few of the ways a doula can be an invaluable member of your birth team and enhance your overall birth experience.

Teresa Howard, owner of Labor of Love Doula & Childbirth Services, is a certified doula and childbirth educator who has attended over 425 births in the last eighteen years. She will discuss the roles of different types of doulas and the services they offer, and why you may want to include a doula in your next birth experience. If you are considering becoming a doula, you may be interested to hear her speak about her experiences, how she has answered this calling and what the certification process entails.

More and more families are seeking a doula for their labors and births as well as during the postpartum period. The research shows that having a doula present during your labor can result in shorter, less interventive labors. Reduces the need for the use of Pitocin as well as analgesics and epidurals. And since moms feel better often times about their birth experience, it lessens their postpartum depression and helps them feel more confident about becoming new parents. This carries forward with the use of a postpartum doula during that critical transitioning time of becoming new parents. The success with breastfeeding is hightened as well as feeling more secure and supported.

I have been a doula since May of 1992. In those 17 years I have supported women in over 425 births. I welcome the opportuntity to share with you about the benefits of including a doula in your birth and postpartum experience. I will also be sharing idea on the role of a doula as well as the training a doula receives.

I look forward to seeing you on the 30th!
